Public bug reported:

I run up to date 22.04 on Lenovo ThinkPad T450. I mostly use a docking
station with the lid closed and an external monitor.

When a power blip happens (and when the power is restored), the external
display reamins black, the gnome-shell goes at 100% CPU and it spams
system log with:

Jul 17 04:39:06 majava gnome-shell[3258]: Attempting to call back into JSAPI
during the sweeping phase of GC. This is most likely caused by not destroying a
Clutter actor or Gtk+ widget with ::destroy sig
nals connected, but can also be caused by using the destroy(), dispose(), or
remove() vfuncs. Because it would crash the application, it has been blocked
and the JS callback not invoked.
Jul 17 04:39:06 majava gnome-shell[3258]: The offending signal was
window-entered-monitor on MetaDisplay 0x5c22932fa110.

This has just happened again and while I was fixing the power I've got
5.3G of syslog with 32+ million lines of the above.

Opening the lid doesn't get me any display output to the laptop's own
screen.

The only viable rescue route is to slogin from another machine and
reboot the laptop (or force power off by holding the power button).

I think I've seen the same scenario happen when I switch inputs on the
monitor. Being a good Pavlov's dog I've quickly learned not to ever
effing try that, so I don't have details of that handy. But overall it
was the same scenario with gnome-shell going into overdrive and no
display output.

PS: I've been using Ubuntu for more than a decade and 22.04 is an
unmitigated disaster. External monitor support with Wayland is a
catastrophe, with the system acting up in weird and unpredictable ways
and going into this kind of tailspin if you as much as squint at it the
wrong way. I now have to reboot every few days b/c Wayland's input
becomes extremely laggy, with mouse pointer moving in spurts and
keyboard spewing dozens of characters on autorepeat.

I installed 24.04 on wife's X1 and the display problems there are _bit_
better, but it's still glitchy. But I cannot go to 24.04 b/c network
manager openvpn plugin is broken and I cannot connect to the office VPN
from GUI (debian package problem, apparently).

** Affects: gnome (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
