it turns out that setting in grub the following parameters solves the issue:  
acpi=force apm=power_off

I didn't mean to attack anyone, or question the professionality of
individual programmers, I also understand that it's not easy to chase
kernel bugs, but sometime it's frustrating to be in the shoes of the end
users, having to deal with these small bugs and never finding a solution
...
