8 years later and not only has this not been fixed, it has possibly
gotten worse. Currently running v1.20 of Retroarch on Kubuntu 24.04.
(Using the PPA, but AFAIK the same is true of the official package in
later releases.) Retroarch currently uses Noto Sans Black from the
Debian package noto-fonts-extra, which weighs in at 342MB, and contains
mostly obscure fonts representing extra variants of non-Latin scripts.
The sole desired font, by comparison, is 520KB. No other package depends
on noto-fonts-extra (it is recommended by some). Assuming no errors on
my part, this means that 341MB of completely useless fonts are being
pulled in by retroarch-assets at present. This is twice the size of the
package itself.
