Thanks Franz, I can confirm that 6.14.0-22-generic which has appeared as in Software Updater (or via apt update && apt upgrade) doesn't boot on an iMac mid 2011.
I reverted to 6.14.0-17-generic by updating grub, changing GRUB_DEFAULT=0 to GRUB_DEFAULT="1>2" (using supergrub).
