As the issue just happened again during the last few days (and is likely
to happen more the following days, due to the addition of another host
to backup), I came up with a work-around. I added a cron job that runs
at the time the daily backup should have been completed for sure, to
kill the hanging process, and continue:
killall -3 taper
After that, it works as before the upgrade to 24.04LTS.
