Is this gimp from another linux machine, or from a windows machine? I
tried these steps with gimp on ubuntu plucky, accessing a remote smb
share configured like yours, also on plucky, and the crash didn't
happen. Also, I used gnome's way of accessing the samba share, I did not
use cifs to mount it locally or something like that.

I'll next try xed, I will have to build it, though.
