Don't know if this is related to -intel driver, but I have same problem. When I shut down my laptop, most of the times I ended up with blank screen and flashing led of HDD in my laptop.
I just installed http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/x11/xserver-xorg- video-i810 from hardy. Dependencies was ok. Also tried http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/x11/xserver-xorg-video-intel, but dependencies was not satisfied.
