I am experiencing similar problems on my Thinkpad X24. I can reliably reproduce this problem by switching to VT 1 with Ctrl+Alt+1. The computer totally freezes, not even Ctrl+Alt+Delete do anything. Pinging the machine is also impossible suggesting it really crashed hard.
