the patch set sbeattie had applied at the time cause a bunch of
subsequent failed arm builds in our ppa

I don't know what the differences are between sbeattie's patch set and
gerald's patch set

but we may want to coordinate this with foundations and try an archive
rebuild to see if we are going to regress building arm

perhaps tobhe can help coordinate this
