tried again today booting into terminal session and not having a desktop
running
before leaving for work

sudo echo DPkg::options \{ \"--force-confdef\"\; \"--force-confold\"\; \} |
sudo tee /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/local
sudo do-release-upgrade -f DistUpgradeViewNonInteractive

came home with a successful upgrade

or at least ffmpeg is working this time

sudo still taking a long time to prompt for password

tho the screen session I was running it in was gone

pretty sure it never rebooted ? left 6:30am got home 5:10pm
tho just found a syslogfile 7:30am so I guess this time upgrade did it in under
30 mins instead of failing 3 hours into and did do a reboot , takes pc ~7 mins
for bios to load with fast memory check on , tho I did turn off all the
disk-shelves so it might have been faster today

uptime
 17:16:13 up 10:55,  6 users,  load average: 2.31, 2.46, 1.72

now to work out what unattended upgrade did I know their was a lot of
applications I did not want to remove
