Thank you for the bug report! I was able to verify this is an issue on
all Ubuntu versions that provide valkey with:
$ apt install redis
$ apt install valkey-redis-compat
$ rm /etc/valkey/REDIS_MIGRATION
...
new version available
...
$ apt update
$ apt upgrade
$ systemctl status valkey
○ valkey-server.service - Advanced key-value store
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/valkey-server.service; enabled;
preset: enabled)
Active: inactive (dead)
Attempting a systemctl restart shows
○ valkey-server.service - Advanced key-value store
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/valkey-server.service; enabled;
preset: enabled)
Active: inactive (dead)
Condition: start condition unmet
└─ ConditionPathExists=!/etc/valkey/REDIS_MIGRATION was not met
The goal of the /etc/valkey/REDIS_MIGRATION file is to block valkey from
automatically starting after migrating from redis in case something in the
automation went wrong. However, when it comes to upgrading valkey later on,
there is no point in creating this file to block the service. I will work on a
fix that avoids this after the initial migration
