I can reproduce with a large image dataset such as
https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/ezzzio/random-images

It does look like thumbnails are taking too much memory. Even though the
folder contains 10MB of jpegs, Nautilus uses 2GB when viewing that
folder.

Also I wonder if Nautilus is using the "recycling" GtkGridView properly?
I would expect thumbnails for non-visible items to not be in memory.
