This bug persists in Ubuntu 2024.10
I don't see how this can be blamed on Pulseaudio. There are surely easy fixes 
to the simple "assert" behaviour to make mocp more reslient/robust.
For one thing, this bug, which has been around for nearly a decade, wouldn't be 
so much of a problem if a better error message was given on failure, ie telling 
user in plain language to lower the volume and relaunch
