@Timo: I strongly disagree. This bug does not affect "an application" or
"non-essential hardware component", as medium bugs do. It "has a severe
impact on a small portion of Ubuntu", those who want to use terminal
can't. Moreover, you can't use the tty to solve X server problems. It is
also "a problem with an essential hardware component" - video, since
framebuffer is video card depended. So, the importance of this bug is
*high*.

@Paul: Please, after reading all these comments here you should be aware
that, first, there is no single workaround for all cards, second, it is
not so hard for unexperienced user to miss a step and turn the whole
system unusable. I wouldn't say then that the workaround is easy.
