I agree, for me it has always said "Desktop effects could not be enabled" (hardy alpha 3) but no info on what went wrong. and if there is a way to solve this. For example in my case GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is not found enough in glxinfo and it would be great if this info was given, maybe in a 'detailed info' button or something.
