Amazing, you are right! I had just noticed that with kernel 2.6.24-3 the rt73usb driver finally started working. It turns out that I saw this bug report and noticed that I had installed /lib/firmware/rt73.bin, when I tried the ralink driver (which does not even compile with recent kernel headers, BTW). Moving the firmware file away made the driver stop working. Moving it back made it work again.
