Using the boot option 'acpi=off' helped me boot the latest gutsy kernel (2.6.22-14-generic). However the kernel also complains about the PnP BIOS and suggests adding 'pnpbios=off', which makes the message disappear. 'hpet=disable' doesn't have any effect on my computer.
