For now, with one monitor there are no problems. So I assume the problem is
related to the two monitor setup.
I have yet to notice a few accompanying problems when the error occurs:
 - Occasionally, an application (e.g., browser) window jumps to the opposite
monitor.
 - During the freezes, if I press the windows key and a menu pops up, it
automatically zooms back to the monitor again (as if I clicked on one of the
windows in the menu) at the time of freeze.
 - The primary monitor (with the gnome panel on top) always has the icons in
the bottom right corner (home directory) partially moved off the monitor when
the error occurs, as if the top panel has moved the entire desktop down by its
height. Icons are aligned correctly at boot time, I have not been able to
determine the cause or time when the shift occurs, but it may be due to a bug.
