I changed in /etc/default/locale and /etc/environment according to the
following:

$ cat /etc/default/locale
LANG="en_DK.UTF-8"

$ cat /etc/environment | grep LANG
LANG="en_DK.UTF-8"
LANGUAGE="en_DK.UTF-8"

This seems to have solved all my problems. My previous locale was
'en_US.UTF-8' before I changed anything in .gnomerc.

So what this boils down to is that just because I want to have
everything in English I got the wrong locale on my initial install and
that caused my printing problems.
