Can you please explain in more detail your second bullet-point:

How would those options in /etc/default/saslauthd exactly modify the
location of the saslauthd.pid file?


In general, I think this kind of improvement would be a good case to be 
forwarded to the Debian maintainers of this package, as Ubuntu currently uses a 
direct import of the Debian package, and we'd like to stay as close a possible 
to the upstream sources.

Would you mind filing a bug-report/feature-request with the Debian maintainers?
