On a previous run, I uninstalled and reinstalled update-manager, since it was complaining about it. But then the crash was worse, and more subtle: the system went into a state where it was running 22.04 but the sources.list file had been adapted for 24.04, so the whole package system was messed up, offering to update 3000+ packages.
