The randomness of this bug really suggested that this was some kind of memory corruption, so I ran Evolution through Valgrind/Memcheck. All of the memory errors are from LD and X (and probably false alarms), and no memory errors occurred when downloading new e-mails nor when the error message appears. I'm not sure if Valgrind is 100% reliable, though.
