ah, apologies! this is my first bug report, thank you for your help. i'm trying
to report an issue with the system handler, i'm not even sure what package that
is. i think it might be one of these:
xdg-desktop-portal
xdg-desktop-portal-gnome
xdg-desktop-portal-gtk
xdg-permission-store
i'll see if i can edit my original post to put it under one of those

** Description changed:

firefox snap tries to open a link in an installed program (e.g. spotify,
discord, etc.)
there isn't anything in the short list, it opens the system handler
relevant program is not installed, but there's an option in system handler to
open the software center and install the relevant software
"gnome-software is not available, file cannot be found"

- the name in the system handler hasn't been updated to reflect base ubuntu's
transition/rebrand of the software center, so it can't open the portal and
install the relevant program.
-
+ the name in the system handler hasn't been updated to reflect base
+ ubuntu's transition/rebrand of the software center, so it can't open the
+ portal and install the relevant program.
+
it needs to look for "App Center" if it's opening a desktop file, or "snap
run snap-store" if it's running a command.
i'm not sure if you can pass a URI to a snap through commands like that
(e..g. snap run snap-store --apt://spotify.data, to open the snap store and
search for matching snaps), but that should be a feature if it's not already
one. at the very least just opening the snap store is better than trying to run
gnome-software. it's not deprecated, but it hasn't been included in the distro
since 23.10
