None on the "ntfsfix" commands worked. Forcing a reinstall of ntfs-3g as 
suggested elsehwre also did not work. Manually mounting worked. Blacklisting 
"ntfs3" now allows auto-mounting.

@nmaxx and @morbius1: thank you for the solution.

My set-up:
