I'm very tempted to close this as "Won't Fix" for gbp-buildpackage as
anything we do here to workaround this is almost by definition hacky and
won't handle all the possible corner cases. As the package is "native"
there's no good/simple regex that can be applied to determine the
"upstream" version (from Ubuntu's point of view -- for Debian the
version *is* the upstream version).

The "correct" fix (at least, it seems to me) is to have setup.py not
parse the d/changelog to determine the version, but that's not really a
decision for us to make?
