Public bug reported: Background ---------- gtk4 switched their default renderer to ngl for the 4.14 series, included in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and they switched the default render again to vulkan for the 4.16 series included in Ubuntu 24.10.
This was preannounced here: https://blog.gtk.org/2024/01/28/new-renderers-for-gtk/ We were unable to get a prerelease of gtk4 4.16 into Debian before 4.16.0 was released and there has been only limited end user testing of the vulkan renderer used in gtk 4.16. Historically, the Ubuntu Desktop team has only done limited bugfix SRUs of GTK to non-LTS releases. There's not a policy against it at all; it's just been a tradeoff with limited capacity and too many things to do. This is a proposal to switch back to the ngl renderer for Ubuntu 24.10 to approximately match what is used in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. For Ubuntu 25.04, we would go back to using gtk4's default renderer (vulkan). Intel ----- gtk4 is working fine for me on Intel graphics on a laptop from a few years ago. But there have been issues for people who use other graphics drivers. Open Issues ----------- https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/issues/?label_name%5B%5D=Vulkan%20Renderer Timing ------ If we are going to make a switch, we need to do it very soon (this week or by Monday) because we are late in the Ubuntu 24.10 release process. ** Affects: gtk4 (Ubuntu) Importance: High Status: New ** Tags: oracular -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2082017 Title: Consider reverting to ngl renderer for oracular To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk4/+bug/2082017/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
