I now believe that ptyxis represents a better gnome-terminal replacement than gnome-console for Ubuntu. ptyxis isn't quite ready for our needs. In fact it's not in Ubuntu yet and is awaiting acceptance in the Debian NEW queue. Additional work is needed after that.
