BJizzle : Could you try to install the backport module by doing this : sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-generic Then reboot and test if sound works.
If it doesn't work, edit this file : sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and modify the following line : options snd-hda-intel so that it looks like : options snd-hda-intel model=acer-aspire the reboot and test if sound works.
