(20060927) The blank screen happens with i386 as well. During the
check, there is text showing each file being checked. Immediately after
it finishes the check the screen clears. It can be typed into (and
echos back). No other VTs can be switched to, and SysRq will display
help, but will not display tasks or memory. SysRq-B does reboot,
though.
One note about the progress bar: it seems to only cycle through the
first 5% or so.
