In case Gerald Butler doesn't respond, I'll add a note to this report. I also had a problem with the Realtek 8139 network card. I moved to Debian Sarge (kernel version 2.6.18-4-486) and the system worked perfectly. Unfortunately for the purposes of this bug report, I no longer have Ubuntu available to test.
