Ok, I've investigated the problem a little further, and there seems to
be many more people that experienced the same sort of error message with
various versions of gnome, both on fedora, debian and ubuntu, for
example here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=585635&page=13,
here http://forums.fedoraforum.org/archive/index.php/t-113359.html, and
here bug: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=456824.

I want to add some things:

- /tmp looks fine
- Gutsy works fine on the same machine
- large amount of diskspace free on / so that is not the problem
- gnome failsafe works equally bad
- I tried waiting over 10 minutes, no difference
- screen just plainly brown, nothing else. but the mouse-pointer works though
- adding another user with adduser and logging in with that makes no difference
- deleting /etc/profile and ~/.* doesn't help
- i did sudo apt-get install --reinstall gnome-session, and then I could login
once. strange. but no success on subsequent logins though. repeating the
re-install helped nothing, so maybe that was just a coincidence.
- I actually managed to log in once more, and checked .xsession-errors. The
same error were there.

I did some strace'ing, and I found this: The two pids reported are
gdmflexiserver.
What is very strange, is that it seems that every time I do an strace of gdm, I
seem to be able to actually log in (but things usually don't work very well
once I'm logged in though). A few times I got in there completely and things
worked. Once I came in there, and firefox and terminal worked, but not logout.
Once I just got an error about nautilus, and nothing more happened.

I also found out that probably this is duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/136529. So sorry if I
caused unneccessary work for you by filing duplicate. Should I paste my
experiences there, or what should I do? Sorry that I could not put all
info in at the beginning, and spams you with many posts...
