Ken, Thanks for the patch. I've followed your instructions and tested booting with both physical discs and booting with one disc detached. The second test failed, the system would just stop like it did without the patch. Unfortunately I know next to nothing about udev, initramfs and friends so I can't do much by myself other than test.
Has anybody else tried Ken's solution?
