The kernel parameter

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i915.enable_dc=0"

seems to have finally done the trick for me. More details can be found

However, could anyone explain why this wasn't needed in kernel 5.8? Is
it because the i915 driver is part of the kernel?
