Public bug reported:

Long story here: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-
software/-/issues/1117#note_1436723

Short story: fresh Ubuntu 20.04 install, using gnome-software for a while and
"suddenly" unusable, without any message in the UI. After long hours of
searching I finally found this workaround: launching gnome-software setting
GNOME_SOFTWARE_PLUGINS_BLOCKLIST=fwupd did the trick.
I don't know exactly what the user has done; but for sure no terminal, no
system file edition, only UI clics.

The fix in fwupd is here:
https://github.com/fwupd/fwupd/pull/2739/commits and published in 1.5.5
release.

What prevents from updating to fwupd 1.5.5 ?

Thanks
