i think there are enough confirmations about the compiz reflection plugin causing this

Find an image, block of text; anything selectable. 2. Click and drag somewhere else inside the browser window. (Desktop drag untested.) 3. Let go of the mouse. 4. System will freeze except for the mouse. Only way out is to power off by button or (safer) holding Alt and SysRq/Print Screen and typing REISUB. Bug seems to be caused by the Reflection plugin as reported by numerous users.
