When I start the Software Updater, I get a reasonable list of items to
install.

BUT, I can't seem to authenticate my identity. Although I am running as root,
and all addresses
(below) say they are running as root, the system refuses to accept my log in as
root: It keeps
requiring me to "setuid root" -- I was able to copy the message (see
Attachment) although it
disables everything else. Rebooting doesn't help.

The refusal gives these addresses:
  /usr/lib/policykit-1/policykit-agent-helper-1

and says I am not setuid root! But, I AM logged in as root and have tried
running setuid root on
all addresses above!

** Affects: ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
