Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

If I try to install Hardy-Server-Alpha-2 to a 500 MB disk with "Guided -
use entire disk and setup LVM" a get an error message "... disk ... to
small ..." (see attachment https:comments/1).

But it is possible to go on with a manual installation with ca. 50 MB
"/boot", ca 128 MB "swap" and ca. 300 MB for a LVM logical volume "/".
The installation proceeds and stops while installing software with the
error message "Installation step failed" (see attachment
https:comments/2). "/var/log/syslog" has a lot of "no space left on
device" messages and "df" reports 0 available blocks on "/".

A 300 MB root partition may be ok, e.g. with a separate "/usr" and/or
"/var" partition. Yes, I know, I decided to make a manual installation.
But I would prefer to get a warning and the possibility to proceed "if
you know what you are doing".

The "Installation step failed" message was not very helpful. There was
no advice to look into "/var/log/syslog" or anything else. Yes, I got an
error message but no hint about the cause of the error and no advice for
a correction. Didn't the package management system know how much space
it needs for the installation?

** Affects: debian-installer (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
