Booting 32-bit linux kernels on 64-bit UEFI is unsupported. Preventing
that unsupported combination from booting is a feature in recent grub
versions, older versions erroneously let the boot continue despite the
kernel possibly being unable to handle the addresses where UEFI services
are located.
