I can confirm this problem in gutsy on a Dell 1420n using rhythmbox and amarok. I also haven't been able to pinpoint what triggers this, but also suspect an issue with suspend. This could possibly be related to the bug filed at the Dell Linux Wiki http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_7.10/Issues/Audio_Failure_On_Resume which references this LP filed bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/dell/+bug/146690. When you resume from suspend, do you get a notification that the volume applet crashed and have to reload?
