If you note the bug you referenced in your last comment (#8), the MATE issue was fixed in hirsute; or what was the then development release (21.04 now) listing the package containing the fix. That fix is unlikely to be back-ported to focal but will exist in future releases (the package used by hirsute is also current in impish) though note I didn't examine to confirm. I dealt with a support issue days ago and installed LXDE on a box (I think it was a 20.04.3 QA-test install I used; but I forget) and it all looked good to me (but this wasn't the issue I was exploring..)
