FYI, my problem with not auto-mounted USB devices on Gnome was caused by hal, 
not started correctly on boot.
See bug #25931 for the details.

To sum up, in /etc/rc2.d, I had S12hal, S13gdm and S50dbus !!
I've just changed that to S12dbus, S13hal and S14gdm (as I wanted S11 just for 
klogd), restarted and all is fine now.

No idea why dbus was started so late.
BTW, I did not have any org.freedesktop.hal errors, nor any crash/freeze like 
in #25931, just the no auto-mount part, now solved.
