I am having the exact symptoms as the OP with the same SATA Controller and using XFS as well. I am in the process of downloading and installing the Kernel you mentioned from the Hardy repository. linux- image-2.6.24-1-generic. I am doing this remotely via SSH and won't be able to test the SATA controller until I get home later. I will post my results asap.
