douglett, it seems we have the same processor and graphics. Before installing 169.04 I had often the same issue with media as you did. Now everything is fine. To install the new beta driver you have to follow correctly the right instructions as in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaManual with where it says *Disable Conflicting Software*. Have you done that?
Because if you haven't, I fear you might end up in the situation I was, while already satisfactorily using 169.04, as you can read in http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3879813&postcount=313 It was so bad that, not having found any way out, I had to install gutsy all over again.
