It could still be a power issue. Inrush current is much higher than
stated and could lead to problems.

- Can you test with a powered hub?
- Can you test with a Groovy image from 
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/groovy/release/?
- Does it work if you plug the SSD into a USB2 port?
- Can you post a full dmesg?
- Do you have wifi or bluetooth enabled and operational at the time of the 
failure?
