Public bug reported:

The xr_usb_serial_common.ko, included in Ubuntu
(https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-
kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/unstable/tree/ubuntu/xr-usb-
serial/README.txt), has fallen out of date. The version included in
Ubuntu is 1A, and the manufacturer's latest version is 1C
(https://www.maxlinear.com/support/design-tools/software-drivers, USB
UART for Linux 3.6.x and newer)

>From the manufacturer's release notes, the newer versions provide:

Version 1C 2017/1/11
        Add the 9-bit mode support.
        Disbale the debug messages.
Version 1B, 11/6/2015
Fixed Bug: The conditional logic to support kernel 3.9 was incorrect(line 396
in xr_usb_serial_common.c).
