Ah, thank you for posting this. So slocate *is* using fts, I didn't know that.
I experienced this problem with a vfat file system that also has >100k files.

There was an issue with fts in coreutils-5.97 (which is still current in
all Ubuntu distros), that affected other recursive file system tools,
such as du (bug #53388). It is fixed in current versions of coreutils,
such as 6.9.x

Can you please try to install the most recent coreutils, 6.9.90, and see if 
this fixes the slocate problem?
