Ah, thank you for posting this. So slocate *is* using fts, I didn't know that. I experienced this problem with a vfat file system that also has >100k files.
There was an issue with fts in coreutils-5.97 (which is still current in all Ubuntu distros), that affected other recursive file system tools, such as du (bug #53388).
