Same here on Ubuntu 20.04(.1). For me it seems like an incompatibility with gnuchess (gnuchessu). I had to uninstall package gnuchess, delete pychess config files (~/.config/pychess, ~/.local/share/pychess) and re- run pychess. All works then.
