Hi Chris, Can you just try loading the sony-laptop module and not the sony-pi module. It wasn't clear if this is what you tried when testing with the Gutsty Gibbon 7.10 LiveCD. It is my understanding that sony-pi has been obsoleted in favor of using sony-laptop. You can even see the following message in your dmesg output:
