Actually, I found the linux-backports-modules for 2.6.20-16-generic on
the following site:

  http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux-backports-
modules-2.6.20/

So, if apt-get could not find the package, the reason is probably that
my sources.list is missing a line or two. Anyways, the linux-backports-
modules for 2.6.20-15 did not contain anything whereas the one for
2.6.20-16 contained the module for e1000-ich9. After modprobing this
module, the network interface was detected and the network also worked.

So, this bug can be safely closed.
