For me it's been enough to remove the vga=xxx option to restore the full functionality of the ttys.
I've got an Acer Aspire 5680 laptop, with NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600SE graphics card and Ubuntu Gutsy Desktop x86. BTW, the vga=xxx option is set easily by the StartUp-Manager, who I think was the first to set the vga option.
